Stupid Mistake
Today, more than 20 years after it happened, I can speak about that dreadful car horror story without breaking into cold sweat.
That day I wanted to drop off my clothes at a dry cleaning store. I had my hands full. I got into the car and started it. It was an old used Ford Crown Victoria.
Now I need to tell you about that car. It was so old! But that was not the worst part. It was an old yellow New York City taxi cab. It was my first car and it was a Ford Crown Victoria car. I just learned how to drive. I was still scared to death to drive. My friend’s father gave me the car. It was not good anymore to be driven as a taxi cab in New York City but it still moved. I liked the car for that reason: it moved. But other than that I was not crazy about it. It was huge. I could hardly reach the gas pedal and the break only if I put a huge pillow behind my back. Besides, it was yellow and a lot of people could not understand what I was doing driving a taxi cab.
Ford Crown Victoria Problems
Anyway, that miserable day I stepped out of the house with my hands full of clothes. I started my Ford Crown Victoria car and then decided to put the clothes into the car trunk. I stepped out of the car with the car running in the parking position. BIG MISTAKE!!! The car started moving. I started running trying to catch it. I wanted to jump into the car to stop it. Alas! I could not catch the car. Pretty soon I realized that if I did not stop running trying to catch my bad-behaving Ford Crown Victoria car, I would be killed. I stopped running and stepped away. The car was moving faster and faster. The transmission was still in parking position. I could see it. It started hitting other cars.
People started looking out of their windows cursing me. I did not hear everything people were yelling at me, but what I heard, was very sophisticated cursing. My car was hitting their cars and they were mad. The car was also hitting dumpsters and making a lot of noise
One of a sudden I saw a car moving right in front of my car. What happened next was incredible. That car hit my car and both stopped. As I found out later, the guy that stopped my car was taking a shower. He heard the incredible noise, jumped out of the shower, jumped in his own car and stopped my moving car with his own. He was a HERO! I wish I remembered his name. Hopefully, if he reads this story, he will drop me a line.
By the time the HERO stopped my car, somebody called police. Nobody was hurt. Later I found out that Ford Crown Victoria car had a transmission problem and it was not the first accident of the same nature. I had to say ‘good bye’ to my Ford Crown Victoria car and buy a new car. But that’s another story.
A Lesson Learned
Needless to say, my car insurance went up. I don’t remember how many car damage claims were made. I think it was something like 10 car damage claims. I was so happy I had car insurance.
I never ever in my life after the accident stepped out of the car while it was running. No matter what the circumstances are, I turn the ignition off and only then I step out of the car. I learned my lesson. I hope that YOU learned a lesson as well.
